This World | Three Things a Person is Entitled To

In a world that constantly tells us we need more—more money, more clothes, more gadgets, bigger cars, and larger houses—the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) offered a profound and liberating message about what truly matters. He simplified life to its most fundamental necessities, teaching us a powerful lesson in simplicity, contentment, and gratitude.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "A person has no more right than to have a house to live in, enough food to sustain them, and clothing to cover their body."

This beautiful teaching reminds us that our most essential needs are simple:

  1. A home for shelter: A place of refuge, safety, and rest.
  2. Food to sustain us: Nourishment to give us the energy to worship and live.
  3. Clothing to cover us: A means of modesty and protection.

Everything beyond these three things is an extra blessing from Allah (SWT) and a test. The bigger house, the fancier car, the latest smartphone—these are not things we are entitled to. They are luxuries we are blessed with, and with those blessings comes responsibility.

This teaching is not meant to discourage us from seeking success or comfort. Instead, it invites us to reflect on our priorities. Are we chasing after more and more, or are we truly grateful for what we have?

The Prophet's words call us to a life of gratitude. When we see a home as a blessing instead of a right, a meal as a gift instead of a given, and our clothes as a mercy instead of a necessity, our hearts are filled with thanks to Allah. This perspective frees us from the endless pursuit of materialism and allows us to focus on what truly matters: our connection with Allah and our purpose in this life.

This week, let's take a moment to reflect on this message. Can we find contentment in simplicity? Can we be grateful for the roof over our heads, the food in our stomachs, and the clothes on our backs, understanding that these are the true essentials? Let's work towards a life of gratitude and simplicity, following the timeless wisdom of our beloved Prophet.
